What is it? The IRS fee charged in certain instances, when assets are transferred to your heirs. Estate taxes are not charged when assets are left to your spouse. When the surviving spouse dies, however, estate taxes--starting at 35% or so and reaching 55%--are levied on the value of an estates assets exceeding the following annual limits:
