Fund Expense Projections

What is it? The estimated cost of owning a mutual fund expressed in dollars. The Securities and Exchange Commission requires mutual funds to disclose in the prospectus expense projections for one-, three-, five-, and 10-year periods on an initial investment of $1,000. The assumptions are that the fund returns 5% annually and that you sell the fund at the end of each time period. Loads, management fees, 12b-1 fees, and other expenses typically are included. Expense projections are useful for comparing what you might actually spend on different mutual funds or different classes of mutual funds. Actual expenses may be higher or lower than the projections.
