Inside Information
What is it? Material information about a publicly traded company that has not been released to the public. Inside information can include anything that affects the company?s stock price, such as earnings reports and merger agreements. In some cases it also can include information about a company in a newspaper column before it is published. It is illegal to trade on inside information even if you are not a company insider. While it is common on Wall Street to trade on tips and rumors, anyone who possesses inside information and acts on it can run afoul of the law. People close to company officials, such as attorneys, accountants, friends, and family members, can sometimes hear confidential information. Even reporters can get a hold of inside information, which is not considered public until the rest of the world knows about it.Added By: Samantha
