American Stock Exchange (ASE Or AMEX)

What is it? One of the major stock exchanges in the United States. Like the New York Stock Exchange, the AMEX is a central auction market, which means it conducts business on a trading floor where traders buy and sell securities from specialists, or market makers in a specific stock. Starting more than a century ago, it moved indoors to its present Manhattan location in 1921. The AMEX is known as a major market for options as well as stocks.Although the AMEX merged with the National Association of Securities Dealers in 1998, the exchange still operates separately under the newly formed Nasdaq-Amex Market Group, a NASD subsidiary.
