Market Close

What is it? The end of the trading day on the major stock exchanges, which are open for business on weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time. Investors pay attention to the level of the market when it closes, and to quantify it, they turn to stock indexes, which measure market trends by using formulas to average stock prices. The New York Stock Exchange Composite Index reflects the entire NYSE market although the Dow Jones Industrial Average of 30 stocks is the most widely quoted. Other major indexes include the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq. Trading occurs after hours under special rules, but the indexes track activity only during regular business hours.
